Chessreg.com is a Washington based small business with a goal of providing chess tournament organizers and participants with a simple, user-friendly registration experience. We've been actively updating and improving our system based on user feedback since our startup in 2011.
Our system allows the use of both NWSRS and USCF ratings. For tournament organizers we offer a suite of powerful tools that make data and membership verification, editing, and exporting registration data a breeze.
Users do not need any accounts to register, either on chessreg.com or with our payment processors.
Event organizers get paid quickly (typically within 2-3 business days of the tournament when using direct deposit).
If you are interested in using chessreg.com for your tournament, please email us: ben@chessreg.com
Ben Radin (he/him) has been involved with chess since grade school. His first chess tournament as a player was the 1993 Bryant Fall Classic. In middle school his chess coach, Robert Karch, taught him the basics of the swiss pairing system. He then continued to study chess tournament pairings with Ollie LaFreniere before pairing his first chess tournament in 1999. Soon thereafter he started pairing other events around the Puget Sound region and he now regularly works 10-20 tournaments per year.
Not satisfied with the functionality of other online registration systems, in 2011 he reached out to his friend Tobin Stelling to discuss the possibility of creating a new system, and thus it was that chessreg.com was born. Since then, they have worked together to develop and improve the system in order to make it easy for both tournament directors and participants to use.
In addition to his tournament work and helping to run chessreg.com, he also serves on the committee that runs the Washington State Scholastic Chess Championships. Last but not least, he is the President of the Board of Directors of the Chess Mates Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that helps provide after school chess education programs. Prior to joining the board, he played in the Chess Mates pilot program at Madrona Elementary, and taught for them when he was in high school.
When he is not helping out with chess programs and events, he works full time doing scenic fabrication at his company, Pacific Northwest Scenic (pnwscenic.com). He also enjoys playing soccer, drumming, and spending time with his wife, Jessica and their cat, Anita.
Tobin Stelling (he/him) has been a software developer in the Seattle area for over two decades, getting his start at the bioinformatics startup Geospiza in 2001. He currently works as a software developer at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, where he applies his experience across a range of languages including Java, Perl, JavaScript, and Groovy.
His connection to chess is less about the board and more about the code behind the scenes. Since chessreg.com’s startup in 2011, Tobin has been the technical driving force behind the platform, continually developing and improving it as a passion project to make tournament management easier for directors and participants alike.
When he's not writing code and performing devops tasks, Tobin enjoys exploring the Pacific Northwest on foot, playing video games, and spending time with his cat, Keno.
